Clams: How to Find, Catch & Cook Them

Before harvesting shellfish you should read your entire local Town's Shellfish Regulations. Towns generally require permits to harvest shellfish. Take care to collect shellfish only from approved areas. In some parts of New England, it is also important to watch for shellfishing closures due to red tides. Shellfish taken from a red tide area can contain a toxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning. The toxin is not destroyed by cooking. Your local Shellfish Constable can provide you with further information.
